Sustainable Teacher Appreciation Gifts

Brooklyn Leave a Comment

With the end of the school year rapidly approaching, it’s time to show a little bit of love to the people in charge of our kids 8 hours a day, 180 days a year. Teachers can be miracle workers. They act as therapists, babysitters, substitute parents, and educators all rolled into one. Because of this, it’s important to show them our appreciation for all of the sweat and tears they pour into their classrooms.

When it comes to showing gratitude, teachers definitely get a lot of things that probably go straight into the trash bin. As a ten-year veteran teacher, I’ve been given everything from apples to gift cards. Some items have found a special place in my classroom while some I’ve lovingly tossed into the bin knowing that it’s the thought that counts. So how do you give them something that’s not going to contribute to the local landfill? You think sustainable and usable! Here are some of my favorite ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week gifts.

Teacher Appreciation Gifts

Idea 01: Teacher Care Package

Does your kid’s teacher come to school every day with the same drink? Do they have a caffeine dependency that rivals most college kids? I’d suggest asking your child what they notice their teacher eating and drinking. Chances are, they know whether or not their teacher is dependent on Diet Coke and Caramello bars. If they don’t, try reaching out to the Room Parent or the teacher.

If you don’t want to go the treats route, then I’d suggest loading up on some quality school supplies. It sounds dumb, but honestly as a teacher there is nothing I love more than a colored pen or nice pencil. Really, school supplies are almost better than Christmas presents.

Start by putting a few items that they are sure to consume together in a cute gift basket. Want to take it to the next level? Put the treats in a novelty mug like these and you’re set!

Idea 02: Gift Those Gift Cards!

This seems like a stupid gift to show your appreciation, but from my perspective, there is nothing better! I love getting gift cards to just about anywhere. Restaurants, Grocery stores, Amazon, there is no such thing as a bad gift card when you’re a teacher. Sometimes I enjoy the ones that allow me to spoil myself, and other times I appreciate the ability to buy something for my classroom or my home. It might seem lame, but these are always appreciated.

Idea 03: Thank You Notes

Again, this one sounds lame and I can definitely hear people rolling their eyes, but as a teacher these are things I keep forever. I love hearing that what I’ve done is making a difference and that what we have accomplished as a class has been memorable. So grab a piece of cardstock, some markers, and let your kids go to town!

Idea 04: Coordinating Gifts

This idea takes a little bit to put together, but coordinating a gift for the teacher from the whole class can go a long way! One of my absolute favorite gifts I’ve received was when one of my classes went to the Principal of my school and asked if I could wear jeans for a week as part of their Teacher Appreciation gift. Being able to wear jeans for the week was amazing. They added that gift card to a few others like:

  • Parent Carpool Swap: One parent volunteered to do my carpool that week so I didn’t have to.
  • Bulletin Board Makeover: Another parent volunteered to “makeover” my bulletin board with whatever I wanted. If anyone has ever put together a bulletin board, you know it’s a time intensive process.
  • Copy Master: This coupon was redeemable for a parent to come in and make my copies for the week. It took some prep, but it was great.

Idea 05: Hydration Station

As a teacher, my physical needs often come last throughout my day. Anything to help me be a little bit healthier is always appreciated. On that note, gifting your teacher a high-end water bottle like this or this is sure to go a long way! Not only does it keep things cold for 24 hours, it can keep this like coffee or tea warm for up to 12. When it takes you three hours to get through your morning caffeine crutch, keeping things hot is a must!

In conclusion, when it comes to teacher gifts, the best bet is to make it usable and reusable! Now get out there and thank those teachers who are making a difference.
